It may be a bit premature, but I honestly believe that Roger Deakins will finally win a Academy Award for his work on Revolutionary Road. His only competition, in my eyes, are: Mandy Walker for Australia (Say what you will about the film, but it looks beautiful) and Claudio Miranda for The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. The Almighty Jeffrey Wells has put Wally Pfister for his work on The Dark Knight and Colin Watkinson for The Fall. I mean, there’s your five nominees right there.
- Revolutionary Road
- Australia
- The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
- The Dark Knight
- The Fall
Your thoughts….
Truth be told, I have yet to be floored by much of anything this year after the incredible crop of 2007. Deakins will probably win it, but certainly more for his career more than this one film. I think Wally Pfister did an excellent job with Dark Knight in terms of reflecting the scope and pacing of the story, especially when it came to his stunning Imax photography, but overall I think the film was a long long way from being the best shot film of the year, and I’m not sure it really deserves nomination. I’m actually hoping Anthony Dod Mantle gets at least a nod for Slumdog Millionaire. It’s a beautiful, energetic film that owes much to the beauty of its photography. Reminds me in many ways of one of my favorite movies of all time, City of God.
